REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY We will remember the victims of war at all Masses Sat/Sun 8/9 November. Church Parade: 10.30am Mass Remembrance Sunday 9 November A wreath will be laid and the 'Last Post' be played at each Mass. Representatives of the various troops will spread poppies at 10.30am Mass.
The Last Post was played at the Menin Gate, Ypres in 1928, to express the gratitude of the Belgian people to those who had done so much for its freedom and independence. It has been played every night, except during WW2, originally at sunset, but now at 8.00pm. It is part of the daily life of the people who are proud of this simple moving tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who fell. We will hear it echo in our church during all our Remembrance Day Masses.

OUR LADY & ST EDWARD'S
4 Marlborough Drive, Fulwood, Preston, PR2 9UE
Dedication of the Basilica of John Lateran 9 November 2008
My Dear Parishioners,
PEACE - 'THE POWER OF LOVE WILL REPLACE THE LOVE OF POWER.'
'One word that brings peace is better than a thousand hollow words.'
'Peace is the only battle worth waging.'
'If you want to make peace, don't talk to your friends, talk to your enemies.'
'Peace cannot be kept by force. it can only be achieved by understanding.
'Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be achieved through understanding.'
'The most disadvantaged peace is better than the most just war.'
'It is easier to lead men in combat than to restrain them and direct them towards the patient labours of peace.'
'We long for the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power.'
'Peace is every step.' ' Peace is beautiful.'
'Peace-making is a process which begins with me, but does not end there.
'All we are saying is 'Give peace a chance.'
'War is never won - never mind what the history books say. Only peace can be won.'
'Peace sounds simple - one beautiful word - but it requires everything we have, every quality, every strength, every dream, every ideal.'
'There is no way to peace; peace is the way.'
'The more we sweat in peace, the less we bleed in war.'
'Peace is not the silence of cemeteries, not the silent revolt of violent oppression; it is the generous tranquil contribution of all to the good of all. Peace is dynamism, peace is generosity.
'If only we could celebrate peace as our ancestors celebrated war. If only we could glorify peace; if only we could infuse peace with the same energy and inspiration that others have put into war.'
'If we have no peace, it is because, we have forgotten we belong to one another.'
THANK YOU to 453 (201,134,118) who celebrated Mass last Sunday and for offerings £856

CELEBRATING THE NEW YEAR!
The Church's New Year, the First Sunday of Advent, begins 30 November with our celebrations starting at 6.00pm Mass Saturday 29 November. For the past two years, children, assisted by their parents, helped us celebrate, in a highly colourful way, the Church's New Year. They made Biblical symbols for the Jesse Tree which adorned the church and lifted our spirits throughout Advent. I hope all will respond with the same enthusiasm and joy again this year.
More details about the symbols next week.
PLANTING DAFFODIL BULBS
The date of the lifting of the Geraniums (Gerania?) and consequent bulb planting depends on the first frost. These planting dates may be an indication of the weather - 25 Oct (2004) 22 Nov (2005) 6 Nov (2006) 12 Nov (2007) 30 Oct (2008). The same 800 bulbs have multiplied and increased by hundreds and have been planted five times.
Many thanks to Jim Bolton who cuts the grass at the back of the Parish Centre and has given his strength, skill and experience throughout the year when the big garden projects were undertaken,

In the play-ground, a little boy came running to me and said, 'Father Pat, did God make germs?' Obviously, someone has told him that I am the expert on such matters.
REMEMBERING
When you remember
me, it means that you carry something of who I am with you; you have a mark on
your mind of who I am; you summon me to your mind even though years and miles
may be between us; if we meet again, you will most certainly know me; even after
I die, you can still see my face, hear my voice and speak to me in your heart;
As long as you keep remembering me, I will never be entirely lost;, you will
give me a reason to live, you will be my consolation when I am sad, you will be
the reason why I feel happy. 'Jesus, remember me when you come into your
kingdom.' perhaps there is no more human prayer in Scripture, no prayer we
can pray so well, and speak to each other. (Based on thoughts of Frederick
Buckner)
'REMEMBER OUR BROTHERS & SISTERS WHO HAVE GONE TO THEIR REST;
BRING THEM INTO THE LIGHT OF YOUR PRESENCE.'
