PARISH FEASTDAY   28 SUNDAY A 12 OCTOBER 2008

My Dear Parishioners, 28 Sunday A 12 October 2008

PARISH FEASTDAY

We are holding our main celebrations this Sunday as it falls between -

The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary Tuesday 7 October

The Feast of St Edward Monday 13 October

I hope that all our families will make a special effort to join us. It is alarming when parents stop bringing their children to Mass and I hope that many will see this special day as a opportunity to start coming to Sunday Mass again.

We welcome the troops and leaders who will parade into church for 10.30am Mass. Our thanks to the other children who have volunteered to read at 10.30am and also at 6.00pm and 8.30am Mass. The Readings and Bidding Prayers are on the website; copies are available in church.

This is a good time to recall the zealous and generous efforts of those who did so much to give us the gift of our parish and church and later our school. Some of these have passed from this life, but many others are still very active among us and give themselves generously.

NEW CHURCH

The formation of a new parish was announced on 1 May 1943; Fr Francis Pearson was appointed Parish Priest. Parishioners gathered on 16 May for Mass in the Carmelite Chapel which was used for over six months as the first church of the parish.

Parishioners were then given a hen hut off Brooklands Avenue. The hut was blessed on 1 December 1943 by Bishop Thomas Flynn and was used for the celebration of Mass for ten and a half years.

Parishioners raised the money to buy the land on which a new church was to be built. The first sod of the new church was cut and the site blessed on 25 January 1953 by Mgr Thomas Eaton VG. The Foundation Stone was laid on 28 June 1953 by Bishop Thomas Bernard Pearson. The new church was opened on 27 June 1954 by Bishop Thomas Flynn. The Bishop had previously opened temporary structures in the Diocese and had been called the 'hen hut bishop.' It gave him great delight to open the first permanent church of his episcopate.

THE NAME OF THE CHURCH

St Edward: Edward Bamber, a priest from Carlton, was arrested in London for being a priest. On the way to his trial in Lancaster, he escaped and was found in a nearby field in 1642 by John de Singleton, Broughton Tower. Edward was eventually recaptured and was imprisoned in Lancaster for three years before his execution on 7 August 1646. Edward Bamber was declared 'venerable'' by the church, but because he was not canonised, it was decided to choose, as the patron of the new church, St Edward (c 1004 - 1066), King of England (1041 - 1066). Edward is called 'Confessor' - one who bears witness to Jesus Christ.

Our Lady: In 1943, due to wartime restrictions, it was very difficult to obtain the licence to start work on a new church. Parishioners promised Our Lady that they would include her name in the title if permission were given. The licence was granted the following week.

Wishing you and your families a happy feastday,  Patrick McMahon
